SINGLE SCENE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE is sitting, notebook open, pen in hand. GERALDO arrives with two coffees, hands one to SOMEONE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Man, I was just thinking\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (sits) Uh-oh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: No, seriously! About what you told me. The dreams. How long have you been logging them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: About twenty years, give or take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (excited) TWENTY YEARS! Dude, that\u2019s gotta be some kind of quest, right? Like self-discovery, mapping the unconscious, spotting patterns\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (sips coffee) Nah. It\u2019s just because I like them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Yeah, but where does that LIKING come from? The depth, the meaning they hold, the way they reveal you\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: I just think they\u2019re cool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (pauses) \u2026cool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Yeah. Like stories my brain makes up. I was losing them, so I started saving them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (scribbles furiously) Okay, but the DECISION to save them already shows you get the symbolic value, the importance of preserving those inner narratives\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Or I just didn\u2019t want to forget the cool stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (stops writing) \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: What?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Nothing. (starts writing again) Keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: And you said sometimes you SKIP logging on purpose, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (pumped) That\u2019s BRILLIANT! It\u2019s an act of inner rebellion, a way to keep autonomy over your own system, to stop it from becoming an obligation that kills the joy\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Pretty much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: How \u201cpretty much\u201d?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Sometimes I\u2019m just lazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026lazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Yeah. Or tired. I want to sleep more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: But you SAID it was to avoid turning it into an obligation!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: That too. But sometimes it\u2019s honestly just laziness. Gets annoying logging everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (re-reads notes) I wrote three pages about autonomy and preserving desire\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Cool. Looks nice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026based on laziness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (shrugs) Laziness is valid too, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Let me ask you something else. Do you have recurring dreams?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: I do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: And do they change over time? Like, same situation but different details?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Yeah! You get that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (super excited) I GET IT! Dude, that\u2019s fascinating! It must be the mind reprocessing memories, updating archetypes, swapping in new people from your life\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: No idea. I just know it happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: And you wonder, right? Like \u201cwas this person always in the dream or did my brain slot them in later?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Yeah, I do!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (triumphant) SEE?! That\u2019s why you started logging! To pin down reality before memory rewrites it, to have proof of what it was, to not get stuck in that doubt!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (pauses) Nah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026nah?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: I started logging because I liked the dreams. Noticing they change\u2026 I only realized that AFTER I was already doing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: So\u2026 you didn\u2019t start BECAUSE of that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Nope. It was a side effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (looks at notes) I built an entire theory around\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: But was the theory good?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Then we\u2019re good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: But it\u2019s WRONG!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (sips coffee) At least it\u2019s pretty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Wait. You said something the other day that I wrote down. (searches notebook) Here! \u201cSimplicity is the best camouflage sometimes\u2026 nobody believes it\u2026 or it\u2019s just the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: I said that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: You did! And man, that line has LAYERS! Because you\u2019re saying simplicity CAN be camouflage, hiding complexity behind the obvious, BUT it can also just be the plain truth, and nobody believes it because they expect something deeper\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (scratches head) I think I mangled the saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: It\u2019s \u201cthe truth is the best camouflage, nobody believes it.\u201d I mixed up the words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (silence) You\u2026 mixed it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Yeah. But it came out similar, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (staring at five pages of philosophical analysis) I\u2026 I wrote about meta-layers of meaning\u2026 about the intersection of simplicity and truth\u2026 about\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (peeks over shoulder) Turned out badass, man. Seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: You created that BY ACCIDENT?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (laughs) Looks like it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (collapses) I can\u2019t believe this\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: What?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: You\u2019re like that guy from the manhwa. Lin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (laughs harder) The one who sells a grammar book and everyone thinks it\u2019s a spellbook?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: EXACTLY! You say simple stuff and I turn it into a philosophical treatise!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: But you enjoy doing that, don\u2019t you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (pauses) \u2026I do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Then everything\u2019s fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (calmer) Can I ask one more question?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Shoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Why do you do things?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (thinks) Like what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: I don\u2019t know. Log dreams. Send that story to the girl. Not practice lucid dreaming. Anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (simple) Because I want to. Or because I don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026that\u2019s it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Yeah. If I want to do it, I do. If I don\u2019t, I don\u2019t. If it starts feeling like an obligation, I take a break. If the desire comes back, I pick it up again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: But\u2026 the meaning? The purpose? The\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (interrupts, gently) SOMEONE. Sometimes we just do things because we want to. Doesn\u2019t need layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (long silence) \u2026and if I NEED to find the layers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (smiles) Then find them. That works too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Even if the layers don\u2019t exist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: If you found them, they exist for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (silence) That\u2019s\u2026 that\u2019s deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (laughs) Or it\u2019s simple and you\u2019re the one complicating it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026I don\u2019t know anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (stands) Want more coffee?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (heading off) Relax. You\u2019ll keep building theories about me. And I\u2019ll keep accidentally breaking them. And that\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: How do you know it\u2019s okay?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (coming back with coffee) Because we\u2019ve been talking for an hour and you\u2019re smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (notices) \u2026true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: See? You like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: And you? Doesn\u2019t it bother you that I keep theorizing about everything?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (sits) Nah. I think it\u2019s cool. You see stuff I hadn\u2019t even thought of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: But that didn\u2019t exist!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (shrugs) Now it does. You created it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026that makes no sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Makes sense to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Silence. They sip coffee.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: I\u2019m gonna write about this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: About what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: This conversation. You breaking my theories. The magic of\u2026 (searches for words)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Simplicity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Yeah! Simplicity! Or truth! Or\u2026 I don\u2019t know, both!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (smiles) It\u2019ll turn out great. Send it to me when you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: You\u2019ll read it and say it was just a normal chat, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (thinks) Probably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: And I\u2019ll get pissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: And then you\u2019ll build another theory about why you got pissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (laughs) \u2026true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: And that\u2019s how we keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Forever?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Who knows. At least as long as we want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (scribbles) \u201cAs long as we want to\u2026\u201d That\u2019s beautiful!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Or it\u2019s obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (laughs) Now you get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
