(Phone rings. Geraldo answers, puts on speaker while handling the coffee maker.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Hey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (voice from phone) Dude, you see this? Everyone posting about karma today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (pours coffee) Yeah. \u201cKarma never fails.\u201d \u201cThe bill always comes.\u201d Thousands of the same posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: But like\u2026 do you believe in it? Karma?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (sips) No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (surprised) How not?! Karma\u2019s a universal law, cause and effect, it\u2019s\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (interrupts, stirs sugar) Which karma? The real one or the Instagram one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026there\u2019s a difference?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (tastes coffee) Big one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Okay, explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (leans on counter) Original karma \u2014 Buddhism, Hinduism \u2014 is just action and consequence. You act, it ripples. Plant violence, harvest conflict. Plant kindness, harvest peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: So you DO believe!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: No. I get the concept. Different thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (confused) How do you get it but not believe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (washes spoon) Getting it is seeing the logic. Believing is thinking the universe keeps score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (sound of scribbling) Interesting\u2026 the difference between understanding and\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (turns off faucet) And Instagram karma is just revenge with a pretty name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (pauses) \u2026damn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (sound of footsteps, voice farther) Let me get this straight. Why DON\u2019T you believe? I\u2019m making coffee too while we talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (laughs) Simple. If you love someone but sit around waiting for karma to get them\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (sound of running water) You don\u2019t really love them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (sound of coffee maker starting) Dude, that makes sense! Because real love doesn\u2019t wish suffering, so using karma as\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (interrupts, washes his cup) Or it\u2019s just obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026obvious?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (turns off faucet) If you love someone, you don\u2019t want them to suffer. Not now, not later, never.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (sound of pouring coffee, voice still distant) But there are layers here. You\u2019re showing that love and cosmic justice don\u2019t\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (dries hands) Nah. Just saying: if you\u2019re waiting for karma, you\u2019re not loving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (back closer to phone) It\u2019s the same thing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (smiles) If you say so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (blows on hot coffee) And that saying? \u201cWhat you put out comes back\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (opens fridge) You want it to?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: What do you mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (grabs something, closes fridge) You want to live calculating everything you do, waiting for the bill?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (sound of stirring, thinks) \u2026no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Then why wish it on others?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (silence, sips) \u2026shit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (sound of flipping pages fast) Wait, that means\u2026 if I don\u2019t want karma for myself, wishing it on someone else is\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (pours more coffee) Hypocrisy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: I was gonna say \u201cethical contradiction\u201d!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (laughs) Same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (more serious) But what if the person did something really bad?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (sips) Still don\u2019t want them to suffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Seriously?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Seriously. Because if I believed in karma, they\u2019d have to suffer, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Yeah\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (puts cup in sink) But do they?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026what do you mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (turns on faucet) You know if they\u2019re suffering? You sure?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (sound of setting cup down) No, but karma eventually\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (turns off faucet) Eventually. (pauses) And you wait. Check. See if they posted something sad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (uncomfortable, sound of chair dragging) I don\u2019t\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (dries cup) And maybe they don\u2019t even know they\u2019re supposed to be suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: How so?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (puts cup away) What\u2019s suffering to you might not be to them. What you think is karma might just be a normal Tuesday for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (pauses, sips) \u2026damn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (processing) You\u2019re saying karma is\u2026 subjective?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (leans on counter) I\u2019m saying it depends on the side. What\u2019s bad for me might be good for you. What I think is punishment, they might see as growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (scribbles slowly) That changes everything\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (wipes counter) Or it\u2019s just: you don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on in their head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026not the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (hangs cloth) It is. You expect them to suffer the way YOU would. But they\u2019re not you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (silence, sound of pen on paper)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (grabs cup again) That\u2019s why karma doesn\u2019t work. Depending on the side, it flips. Or doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (thoughtful, scribbling) Everyone lives a different reality\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (sips) Don\u2019t know. Just know you can\u2019t measure their karma with your ruler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (sound of flipping pages) I wrote three pages about this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (washes cup) Cool. Look nice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Yeah. But it might be wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (dries cup) If it makes you think, it\u2019s worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (confessional) Have you ever wished karma on someone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (turns off faucet) Yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: And\u2026?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (dries cup) Got stuck on it. Waiting. Checking everything that happened to them, wondering \u201cis this karma?\u201d Wasted months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: And then you realized\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (puts cup away) It was a waste of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026that\u2019s it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (closes cabinet) Yeah. Like watching a bad show hoping it gets better. Better to turn it off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (pauses, sips) You have a way of simplifying everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (smiles) Or you have a way of complicating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (laughs) Could be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (hesitant) What if I told you I NEED to believe in karma? For peace?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (serious, stops moving) Then believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026seriously?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Seriously. If it helps, use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (confused) But you just spent half an hour saying karma is\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (resumes cleaning counter) I said what I think. You do you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: And truth? Logic?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (stops cleaning) SOMEONE. If it gives you peace, be at peace. You don\u2019t need my approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (silence, sound of cooling coffee) That\u2019s pretty mature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (resumes cleaning) Or I just don\u2019t care what you believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: You\u2019re doing it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (laughs) What?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Saying something kind and then stripping away the depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (hangs cloth) The depth\u2019s in your head, not my words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (deep breath) Last question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (leans on sink) Go for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: If you don\u2019t believe in karma, what do you do when someone screws you over?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (crosses arms) The universe isn\u2019t gonna do my part. So I do: I move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: That\u2019s it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (turns on faucet, fills glass) Yeah. Let them live their life. No waiting for punishment, no cosmic spreadsheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (quiet) And the anger? The hurt?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (turns off faucet, drinks water) They stick around. For a while. Then they fade. Or don\u2019t. But I don\u2019t turn them into a religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (scribbling) \u201cDon\u2019t turn hurt into a religion\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (washes glass) Gonna write about that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Yeah. And you\u2019ll read it and say it was just a chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (dries glass) Probably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: And I\u2019ll get kinda pissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (puts glass away) And then you\u2019ll build a theory about why you got pissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (laughs) \u2026true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: And that\u2019s how we keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (curious) For how long?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (looks out kitchen window) Who knows. As long as we want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (scribbles) \u201cAs long as we want to\u2026\u201d That\u2019s beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (turns back to phone) Or it\u2019s obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (smiles, audible) Same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Now you get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Silence. Sound of coffee being sipped on both sides.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (softer) I\u2019m gonna write about all this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (wipes last thing on counter) I know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: You\u2019ll break my theory again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (hangs cloth) Probably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: And I\u2019ll build another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (smiles) And I\u2019ll drink coffee while you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (soft laugh) You like this, don\u2019t you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (pours more coffee) I do. You see stuff I never thought of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: But that maybe didn\u2019t exist!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (sips) Now it does. You created it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: \u2026that makes no sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (puts cup in sink) Makes sense to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Silence. Sound of scribbling on the other end. Geraldo washes cup.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (quiet, distant) Want more coffee?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (turns off faucet) Yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (sound of distant pouring) Suddenly I do too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (laughs, pours more for himself) It\u2019s contagious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Sound of coffee pouring on both sides. Comfortable silence.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: (yawning) Getting late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: (sips) Yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOMEONE: Thanks for the chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GERALDO: Anytime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
